Devon man arrested for fatally shooting woman at Wawa with assault rifle
Media, PA -- Today District Attorney Katayoun M. Copeland and Superintendent Christopher Flanagan of Radnor Township Police Department announced the arrest of Brian T. Kennedy, 34, of the 300 block of Sugartown Road in Devon, who shot a woman on the evening of Thursday, March 28, 2019.
Brian Kennedy, 34, is charged with criminal homicide, murder of the first degree, murder of third degree, possessing instruments of crime, all felonies of the first degree, and several counts of recklessly endangering another person. The investigation was conducted by Detective Thomas Schreiber of the Radnor Township Police Department with assistance from Detective Mike Jay of the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office Criminal Investigation Division (CID).
On March 28, 2019, at approximately 8:22 p.m., Radnor Township Police Department was dispatched to the Wawa located at 151 Old Sugartown Road in Wayne for the report of shooting. Upon entering the Wawa, Officer Stephanie Racht observed a female victim, later identified as Stephanie Miller, laying on the floor of the store with a gunshot wound to her head and additional gunshot wounds to her stomach area. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detective TJ Schreiber of the Radnor Township Police Department and CID Detective Michael Jay conducted an immediate investigation. As a result of witness interviews, video surveillance, and police investigation, law enforcement was able to determine that an individual identified as Brian Kennedy arrived on scene at the WaWa to meet the victim, with whom he shared custody of a child. Kennedy retrieved a DTI AR-15 rifle from the trunk of his car, entered the store, and repeatedly shot the victim. Kennedy then fled the scene in his vehicle. At approximately 10:37 p.m. that same night, Kennedy was located in his vehicle by Pennsylvania State Police Patrol at Thornbury Park in Thornbury Township, Delaware County, PA.
“In this case, the victim, Stephanie Miller, was brutally murdered at the hands of Brian Kennedy, taking an innocent life in a senseless act of violence,” said District Attorney Katayoun M. Copeland. “With no regard for human life, the defendant used an AR-15 to murder the mother of his child while also placing numerous others at risk of losing their life. While we know this arrest does not undo the tragedy that occurred last evening, our office will continue to work to bring justice to this case, the victim, and her family,” said District Attorney Copeland. “I would like to commend the Radnor Township Police Department for their swift action, as well as CID Detectives, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Tredyffrin and Eastown Police Departments, for their assistance in investigating and apprehending this dangerous individual.”
CRIMINAL CHARGES, AND ANY DISCUSSION THEREOF, ARE ALLEGATIONS AND ALL DEFENDANTS ARE PRESUMED INNOCENT UNLESS AND UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.
