Sharon Hill man found guilty of attempted murder, strangulation of wife
Media, PA -- Today District Attorney Katayoun Copeland announced that on the evening of April 13, a jury found Tyre Bey of Sharon Hill guilty of beating and strangling his wife, nearly to death, who was seeking a divorce. As a repeat and violent offender, the defendant faces a mandatory minimum 10-year sentence.
Tyre Bey, 42, of Sharon Hill, was convicted of attempted murder and aggravated assault, both felonies of the first degree, in addition to the charges of terroristic threats and simple assault.
On Sept. 8, 2016, Sharon Hill Borough Police were dispatched to Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital for the report of a female victim who had been assaulted. Upon arrival, police spoke to the female victim who stated that she was sleeping at her home, and at approximately 2:00 am, the defendant, Tyre Bey, entered her bedroom, and the two began talking about their relationship. At this time, the victim had set her cell phone to record the conversation. After two hours of conversation, the female victim adamantly told the defendant that she wanted a divorce. The interaction turned violent and the defendant, Tyre Bey, punched the victim in the face, knocking out her front tooth. He then choked her with his hands around her throat. The victim attempted to fight back and bit the defendant’s finger. During the struggle, it can be heard on the cellphone recording that the defendant told the victim “you’re going to die tonight” and while strangling her, and said, “Bye, bye, bye, bye...”.
The Commonwealth was represented by Assistant District Attorney Matthew A. Catania. The investigation was conducted by Detective Vincent Port of the Sharon Hill Borough Police Department and Detective Sgt. Kenneth Bellis of the Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division (CID).
“Mr. Bey is a violent, dangerous individual who, with his bare hands, nearly killed the mother of his children and the woman he supposedly loved,” said District Attorney Katayoun Copeland. “As a repeat, violent offender, Mr. Bey faces a minimum of 10-years imprisonment. I would like to commend Assistant District Attorney Matthew Catania who prosecuted this case and Samantha Bass, from Crime Victims Services of Delaware County, Women Against Rape, and the Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County, who provided outstanding support to the victim and her family. I would also like to commend Det. Vincent Port of the Sharon Hill Police Department and CID Det. Sgt. Kenneth Bellis who both retrieved and transcribed the cell phone audio from the night of the assault, which served as crucial evidence in this case,” she said.
Tyre Bey was remanded to the George W. Hill Correctional Facility, as bail was revoked by Delaware County Court of Common Pleas Judge Richard Cappelli. Sentencing is scheduled to take place on June 4, 2018.
